Ames Library Exhibits
From 1998-2005 Ames Library had an exhibit case which displayed treasures drawn primarily from our rare book collection. Since the items contained in this web site show the diversity and richness of holdings of the Ames Library, we continue to show them here.
The First Afghan War, 1839-1842
|
Afghanistan has endured wars and invasions throughout its history. During the nineteenth century Britain fought three wars with Afghanistan. The First Afghan War raised numerous questions regarding British imperialism and what would be the extent of British India. Since the war happened before newspapers were able to send reporters to cover the campaigns, soldiers, officers, and others recorded their impressions and sketched views of Afghanistan. These impressions and sketches often were published. This exhibit contains selected examples of such works.
